Simpler than Crtl-C + Ctrl-V: transmit your data

Are you under the care of a doctor and want a specialist to take charge of your case? Pass it on to him! You can bring him all the necessary documents in a pocket, or send them to him electronically. The same goes for your insurance or your bank. To do this, exercise your right to portability. Very close to the right of access , it allows you to retrieve your data in a computer readable format (which is not necessarily the case when you exercise your right of access) and therefore to transmit them to another platform which will know read and save them.

The definition and explanation of rights are the sole responsibility of the author and cannot replace the texts of European regulations.

Definition of law

Right to recover the data that an organization has on you to be transmitted to another organization. The data is transmitted in a computer readable electronic format.

The limits of the law

This right only concerns data known as portable, that is to say, readable by a machine.

  • Thus, the x-rays of your tibia will not be carried, as well as any other document on physical support. However, this data must be returned to you no matter what. It is then up to you to send them to the recipient of your choice.

Your right must be exercised without infringing the rights and freedoms of third parties.

  • For example, if you retrieve contacts from your directory and pass them on to a third-party service, that service should:

    1. put them at your disposal

    2. do not use them for commercial prospecting purposes

We're hungry for data!

According to the regulations, only the data collected with our agreement or as part of a contract that we have signed with the organization are concerned. Seen like that, it doesn't really make you want to take a look ...

Would you like some more ?

But the right to portability goes further than our personal data such as our name, first name, date of birth, email etc. Indeed, we must be able to retrieve our contact details, but also our Likes, our purchase history or the data recorded by our watches or connected scales, etc. Exercising this right with companies promises great discoveries!

Unfortunately, video surveillance images, tax returns, etc., are not yet concerned ... just like the data calculated from our behavior or from our data (customer value, risk score, etc.). Of course, transmitting surveillance images with our paper clip from one city to another is of no interest. Transmitting a credit risk rating from one bank to another offers only limited interest: indeed, banks all have their own methods of calculating risk. We therefore agree on the fact that carrying this data has no interest, on the other hand, that we can have access to it in a!

What should we expect?

As much when you exercise your right of access, you are able to easily read your data, as much in the case of portability, it can be another kettle of fish. Why ? Because this data must be able to be read and interpreted by a machine. This is the principle of portability: transmitting your data from one machine to another.

The data must therefore be in a structured format, usually CSV or JSON files. Both of these file formats are readable by a simple text editor, although it won't be very clear. For CSV format, import the file into your favorite table, it will show you the data in columns and rows. For JSON files, you can use SublimeText, for example.

These two formats are the most common today. However, data in PDF format or images may not be read automatically by the platform to which they will be transmitted. But nothing prevents you from consulting them while waiting for the organization to send them back to you in the correct format ;-)

How does it work on Dare?

When you exercise your right to portability on Dare with an organization, you will find your data in your safe (My Data). It's up to you to do what you want with it!

Finally, when you exercise your right with Dare, we send you your data in CSV format. Thus, you are guaranteed to be able to open them and transmit them without problem to any platform.
